Unbound is now expanding into additional parts of the industry, first partnering with ManServant to create a classy bachelorette party experience. They're calling it "Death to the Penis Cake." As of next week, Unbound will also highlight a new lingerie brand on its website weekly, with a goal to find lingerie for all women and body types.

At first, I was a bit apprehensive of a sex toy 'scrip. Having worked at a sex shop I consider myself a "junior sex product specialist" and am very particular when it comes to my products, specifically what I would recommend to my clients or readers.

Each box includes one or two "anchor" products, meaning something from a high-end label like LELO, JimmyJane, Minna or Bijoux Indiscrets. This is the basis around which the rest of the box's items are selected. These can range from a vibrator to Kegel exercisers, or even the Love is Art kit a la Lady Gaga.

Anchor products start in price from $45 and range significantly higher. For instance, the JimmyJane HelloTouch vibrator included in Unbound's "Modern Love Box" retails for $79 on the JimmyJane website. Not including the other items in the box, that anchor product alone means the box pays for itself.

The other 3-4 products usually include a lubricant, pasties, condoms or props.

Unbound tries to provide its customers with a variety and searches through all sorts of brands to create a mix of products. This doesn't mean all of the products need to be used at once, however. The Unbound team, comprised of three women who have all worked in the sex product industry, curate what goes inside the box.

I received the latest box from Unbound, called "Femme Fatale." Each box has a theme and the products are chosen to match the aesthetic, adding to the coolness factor.

This box included The Vesper by Crave, the world's first rechargeable, multi-speed vibrator necklace, the Bijoux Feather tickler, Biddettes before and after personal wipes, and Secret Love Notes, made by Unbound.

I had heard of The Vesper when it debuted in 2014 but I thought it was hokey. There's no way something that small can be powerful enough. Having only tested it as I would with a new toy at my old job, meaning the on back of the hand, I am very surprised and impressed with this toy.

I highly recommend the Unbound box. It's perfect for "sexperts" like me, but great for beginners who don't know where to start in the world of sex products, which can be highly overwhelming. Besides well known brands like LELO or JimmyJane, it introduces "indie" brands of the sex world, such as Sustainnatural condoms or Good Clean Love lubricants.

But like most subscription kits, there will be some things you receive and don't enjoy; for instance, the feather tickler I received is mainly a desk accessory now.

While the point of the kit is to try things you normally wouldn't and expand your sex repertoire, no one likes to pay for things we don't want. My hopes is that, like other subscription kits, Unbound will create a "personality quiz" to feel out for comfort level, experience, necessity and preferences when it comes to sex products.

It should also be noted that Unbound selects products for people with vaginas; not to say everyone can't try them in other ways, but anatomically all of the actual sex toys are designed for vaginal use. There are no male masturbators in any of the boxes, but this is because of the company's dedication to women, in this case, cisgender women. The inclusion of condoms in some of the boxes is likely the most heteronormative item you'll encounter.

At my sex shop, it was mostly women coming in for products for “her” or to enhance “her” pleasure. There is of course a hugemarket for male sex toys, but those with penises have typically can achieve orgasm more quickly. Women are still shamed for masturbation or even having sex, so I’m all for a company that is telling women, though cisgender, it is okay to have an orgasm.

Unbound is dedicated to the empowerment and confidence of women through the means of sex positivity. Its website has become a new favorite for discussions regarding body positivity and sex, self love and news within the sex-positive community.

The Good:

Expands sexual repertoire • Exposes subscribers to new brands and products • Incredible value

The Bad:

No customization available, making it so subscribers will probably receive items they'll never use • Mainly heteronormative, designed for cisgender women only

The Bottom Line:

While we hope to see the Unbound brand continue to grow and expand its options, this is a fun way to bring excitement into the bedroom and encourage sex positivity among women.
